About Kathy

My Sewing Story

I am a sewist. I had been pursuing my passion for sewing as a hobby. What started out as making my own clothes has since developed into making unique quilts, small gifts, home & office wall art and cotton dolls. Being on a budget I decided to start up my online business to sell what I sew, so I can buy more fabric, so I can sew even more. I do hope you are as thrilled as I am with my Custom Sewn Comforts.

My Sewing Challenge

In 2014 I entered my first sewing contest in the American Sewing Expo in Novi, Michigan because of the very determined urging of my very best girlfriend, Edna. I had no time to do something like this and I agreed to look at the contest descriptions thinking I would not be able to do any of them. I was wrong, this one seemed simple enough.

For a $10.00 entry fee I submitted my application to the “Push the Envelope — Anything Gos” contest open to anyone for the first 100 entrants. The challenge was to use all of the three products sent from A&E Consumer Products to use in our contest projects, which we could use to “make anything sewn: quilt, garment, home décor item, accessory, etc.-let your imagination run free.”

While I waited anxiously for my A&E products to arrive I researched the internet for the products A&E made because I wanted to start brainstorming what I would sew to enter their contest. However, what I found was that they made threads and zippers, even threads for astronaut suits, amazing!

My contest kit finally arrived. It contained three different spools of their threads and one bright red 5″ zipper with a decorative bronze zipper pull. Looking through my sewing books I found a beginner serging book that had a small unique looking cross over purse pattern that I adapted to use the zipper provided.  I used their threads not only to sew the purse together but also to embellish the fabric. Once I had decided what I would make sewing it up was fairly easy.

Finally the big day arrived. We found the winners display at the Expo. There it was, I had won an Honorable Mention (4th place) ribbon. My disbelief that I had won was very much overshadowed by my pure excitement and what made it real was that I had won a box of a dozen spools of their beautiful threads. WOW!

My Sewing Goal

My sewing goal is to challenge my creative spark by entering fabric art contests and exhibitions.

Thank You Kathy for making my idea for my newphews morse code quilt come true!
